A place for us Pamela Edwards
The new L'Oreal Institute for Ethnic Hair and Skin Research in Chicago is focusing on the science behind our beauty needs. Opened in 2003, the institute is the first and only research facility, operated by a beauty company, dedicated to conducting and supporting basic scientific research to better understand the unique properties of the hair and skin of people of African descent. We checked in with Victoria Holloway Barbosa, M.D., vice-president of research and development, and her team of experts for late-breaking news OB our most pressing hair-care questions:
ESSENCE: What are our most damaging hair practices?
L'Oreal Institute: We caution against overprocessing. We must take into account the condition of our hair when we schedule chemical treatments. Most people should not use relaxers more often than once every six to eight weeks, and they should try to space these processes out even further if possible. In addition, permanent hair color should be applied at least two weeks after relaxer treatments. Women who use chemicals regularly should take care to deep-condition their hair with each shampoo and use a leave-in conditioner for added protection.
Black women face more hair-care challenges than women of other ethnicities. Research shows that Black hair is inherently more fragile than Caucasian or Asian hair. And it grows more slowly on average than other hair. Therefore it's important that we avoid damaging practices. The top three culprits are overprocessing with chemicals, excessive use of heated styling implements, and the use of too much traction (pulling) in hair care and styling.
ESSENCE: What's the best way to soften and moisturize rough ends without weighting them down?
L'Oreal Institute: Humectants such as propylene glycol and cationic polymers like polyquaternium are excellent ingredients for softening and moisturizing.
ESSENCE: If you've been using no-lye relaxers for years, is it okay to switch to a lye relaxer?
L'Oreal Institute: Yes, you can switch between lye and no-lye relaxers. You cannot switch, however, to thiol-based curl products like the Wave Nouveau or the Jheri Curl.
ESSENCE: You find a shampoo and conditioner that you love. After a while you stop seeing the beneficial effects. Why? And what can you do about it?
L'Oreal Institute: Your hair can seem to "adjust" to conditioning shampoos and conditioners. This situation is actually caused by a buildup of conditioning agents on the hair. By switching to a nonconditioning shampoo for one or two cleansing cycles, you can return to your favorite product and should see good results again.
